How to Handle the 1-Seeds in Your Bracket!
Since the tournament expanded in 1985, all four 1-seeds have only advanced once (2008). More often, just one or two make it. In 39 Final Fours, one No. 1 seed has made it 17 times, two have made it 16 times, three have made it four times, and one year saw zero 1-seeds!
What Kinds of Seeds Actually Make the Final Four?
Since 2010, here’s how many teams of each seed have made the Final Four:
No. 1 seeds — 18
No. 2 seeds — 10
No. 3 seeds — 4
No. 4 seeds — 6
No. 5 seeds — 5
No. 7-11 seeds — 13 combined
Upsets Happen—A Lot!
From 1985-2009, only 13 No. 1 seeds failed to reach the Sweet 16. But from 2010-2024 (just 14 years), 13 more have been knocked out early! A 1-seed has fallen in the first or second round in 11 of the last 14 tournaments, including the last four straight!
And, don’t forget Cinderella runs—at least one double-digit seed has made the Sweet 16 in 16 straight years!
